Safdarjung Hospital
Safdarjung Hospital was founded in 1942 during the Second World War as a Base Hospital for the allied forces. It was taken over by the Govt. of India in 1954 under the Ministry of Health. It has grown over the years into one of the largest, tertiary, level multi-disciplinary healthcare institutions in this part of the World. Based on the needs and developments in Medical Care, the hospital has been regularly upgrading its facilities from diagnostic and therapeutic aspects in all the specialities. The hospital which started with only 204 beds now has 1531 authorized beds. The hospital provides medical care to millions of citizens not only of Delhi and the neighbouring states but also to people of neighbouring countries.
The hospital has been a centre for training and teaching of post – graduate students since 1962. In 1973 the hospital faculty constituted of clinical faculty of the University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) to which it was attached till 1990. Even after the college (UCMS) shifted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital at Shadara, Delhi. The hospital still continues to impart post-graduate training in various specialties and super specialties. The hospital is also a centre for training of interns from various institutions in the country and abroad. From academic year 2008 onwards all PG seats have been affiliated to GGSIP University.
VARDHMAN MAHAVIR MEDICAL COLLEGE
Vardhman Mahavir Medical College was established at Safdarjung Hospital by the Government of India in November, 2001. Its inauguration was done by the then Honourable Prime Minister Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 17th December, 2001 in presence of Sh.L.K.Advani, Sh. C. P. Thakur and Founder Principal Dr. Jagdish Prasad. The College building was dedicated to the Nation by the Vice President Sh. M. Hamid Ansari on 20th Nov. 2007 in the presence of Honourable Health Minister Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss. The first batch of MBBS students was admitted in February, 2002. Post-graduate courses (MD/MS) in clinical subjects were running at Safdarjung Hospital even before the establishment of VMMC. The (MD/MS) course in Pre and Para clinical subjects were started in year 2011. Over the period of time, the numbers of MD/MS seats have been increased. The College also is running super specialization (Mch/DM).
VMMC is affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University; New Delhi. Over a decade the VMMC College has established itself as a prominent medical institution in India. (A Medical marvel by as India Today Aspire August 2013.)
Safdarjung Hospital is the largest hospital under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and is well known for its quality of services to all strata of society since pre-independence days. As on date, it has more than 1550 beds including bassinets. It has an annual OPD attendance of more than 10 lakh patients. Vardhman Mahavir Medical College in association with Safdarjung Hospital provides modern facilities in all kinds of investigations and patient care. This medical college & hospital has speciality and super speciality departments like Dept. of Cardiac Surgery (CTVS), Cardiology, Neurology, Urology, Nephrology, Respiratory Medicine, Burns & Plastic, Paediatric Surgery, Gastroenterology, etc. It has modern facilities for angiography, angioplasty, valve replacement and repairs, coronary artery bypass grafting, lithotripsy, sleep laboratory, endoscopies, arthroscopies, video EEG, dialysis, spiral CT, MRI, automated blood Test analyzers etc.
The Office of the Principal is located on the ground floor of the College building. For all matters related to admission, examination, fee, certificates, degrees, hostel, scholarship etc, the Academic Section which is also on the ground floor, can be contacted.
SPORTS INJURY CENTRE (SIC)
A modern Sports Injury Centre (SIC) at Safdarjung Hospital has been established with an objective of providing comprehensive surgical, rehabilitative and diagnostic services under one roof for specialized treatment of Sports and Joint Disorders. It was considered that the establishment of the Sports Injury Centre will also benefit the participants of the Commonwealth Games to be held at New Delhi in October, 2010. Therefore, with constant monitoring of the project, the Centre was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 26.9.2010 and made functional well before the start of Commonwealth Games, 2010. It is one of the largest medical outfits in the South East Asia catering to the specific needs of the sportsmen and women. The Centre also aims to develop the specialty of Sports Medicine in due course.
Earlier, the Arthroscopy and Sports Injury & Joint Disorder Facility was functioning as a Unit under the Central Institute of Orthopedics at Safdarjang Hospital catering to the needs of the sportsmen and personnel of paramilitary forces from all over the country who were being referred to this unit for the specialized treatment of sports & joint related injuries. It handled about three thousand cases and performed almost five hundred Arthroscopies every year. During 2008, considering to the long felt need of the nation, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India decided to upgrade and upscale these facilities and establish a modern Sports Injury Centre under the aegis of the Safdarjung Hospital considering that Sports are becoming more and more intense and competitive and thus, the nature of Sports Injuries and Joint Disorders becoming more complex requiring management of such injuries with special skill and latest technology/expertise.For more...
